Some Tory MPs earned money doing private work including consultancy on top of their £65,738 basic wages for representing their constituents, the figures show.

The figures are published in the register of members' interests which allows the public to scrutinise the income of politicians.

The figures showed that Cannock Chase Tory Aidan Burley has his own consultancy business and that he made £1,800 doing four-and-a-half days work.

South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson today defended the extra work they do saying that it helped them in their work as MPs. Mr Williamson made £4,000 for 84 hours work as business adviser to NPS Property Consultants.

But he revealed he had stopped doing outside work in January.

Mr Williamson said: "It was a difficult thing to balance."
