Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 breaks cover

High-performance ‘four-door coupe’ benefits from 2.0-litre, 302bhp powertrain, aggressive look and chassis tweaks

In a move that was as predictable as forecasting rain during April, Mercedes-AMG has introduced a CLA 35.

Based on the recently introduced, second-generation version of the ‘four-door coupe’, the CLA 35 gains a highly strung 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol lifted straight from the A 35 hatchback revealed last year.

Delivering 302bhp and 400Nm of torque to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, this potent four-pot allows the CLA to cover the 0-60mph sprint in 4.7 seconds before reaching an electronically limited 155mph top speed.

Helping to contain that beefier powertrain are a number of chassis tweaks, including improved torsional stiffness up front with the addition of an aluminium ‘shear panel’, an adjusted steering rack and the optional inclusion of adaptive dampers.

Its powertrain and improved underpinnings may put the CLA 35 leaps ahead of the rest of the range, but how does it stand out visually from its more pedestrian brethren? Mercedes-AMG has taken care of that with a new radiator grille and tweaked bumper up front, while at the back a diffuser has been added along with a small spoiler on the boot. Eighteen-inch wheels are included as standard too, although a 19-inch set can be specified optionally.

Inside, this racier feel is continued. A flat-bottomed multifunction steering wheel is included, while metal paddle gear shifters fall to the fingertips of the driver. A ‘Supersport’ mode is available for the digital display that replaces traditional dials gauges too, which places a rev counter front and centre of the screen with other info shown in the form of bars to either side.

While a final list of equipment is yet to be confirmed, the CLA will take on Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system, which includes a ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice assistant that works similarly to Apple’s Siri.

Expect to hear more about UK specifications and pricing later this year, with the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 likely to launch towards the end of summer.
