Tasty! Bake Off winner recreates iconic Skoda cake advert

Top cook crafts small-scale version of new Fabia in homage to its predecessor’s ‘Full of lovely stuff’ TV spot

Skoda has teamed up with 2016 Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown to recreate one of its most memorable TV ads.

She used lemon sponge, buttercream and fondant icing to craft a delicious-looking miniature Fabia, harking back to the brand’s advert for its predecessor. Skoda’s ‘Full of lovely stuff’ ad saw a team of bakers creating a Mk2 Fabia from all manner of tasty foodstuffs, including jelly for the supermini’s headlights, liquorice taking the form of the fan belt and golden syrup ‘oil’ in the cake engine.

The original cake from the 2007 advert was nearly four metres long, but Brown’s version is rather more achievable for the home baker. The recipe is available on Skoda’s website, with the confection comprising six layers of sponge cake and a whopping 2.5kg of fondant icing.

Creating your own ‘Fabia-lous’ foodstuff simply involves sandwiching the layers together, carving out the shape of the car with a bread knife, giving it a fondant coating and decorating it.

Brown said: “Everyone remembers and loves the original ad, so when I got the challenge through to recreate the new Fabia out of cake, I jumped at it. We’re encouraging everyone and anyone to have a go to see if they can recreate the car.

“The beauty of baking is that it doesn’t matter how good or bad you are, regardless of what it looks like cake is always delicious, so you can’t go far wrong… hopefully.”

The new Fabia is priced from £12,840 in dealerships. The cake is somewhat cheaper, with all ingredients available for around £25 in any major supermarket. However, we’d only recommend filling one of them with petrol.
