Facelifted Fiat 500X gets new technology and engines

Fiat has facelifted the 500X, bringing the ageing crossover into the modern age with a new range of engines and improved technology inside and out.

The 500X gains a revised look split across two distinct models – Urban and Cross. Mirroring its 500L sibling, Cross gains a tougher, faux-rugged image with aluminium-look skid plates at the front, beefier bumpers and different designs of alloy wheel. There’s also a Cross Plus trim to top the range.

Meanwhile, the Urban model receives new bumpers front and rear to bring it up to date.

New LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights are standard across the range, while plush Cross Plus models feature standard LED headlights.

Design changes on the inside are a little more limited, with a rethought instrument cluster, new steering wheel and some new switchgear to improve the intuition of the driver environment. Technology has improved greatly, though – all models now receive traffic-sign recognition and lane-keeping assist as standard, while blind-spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control are available as optional extras across the range.

Connectivity takes a boost too, with a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard across the range. TomTom satellite navigation is possible through Fiat’s Uconnect app.

The 500X also benefits from the latest Fiat Chrysler Group engines – as fitted to its Jeep Renegade sister car. Kicking off the range is an old-fashioned 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol with just 108bhp, but next up is an all-new and far more modern 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo with 118bhp. It’s mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

Topping the current range is the all-new 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbo, which produces 148bhp and is paired with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. There are currently no diesels on offer, in contrast to its Jeep Renegade sibling.

Pricing for the new 500X kicks off at £16,995 for an entry-level Urban model equipped with the 1.6-litre petrol engine. You’ll need to opt for the mid-spec City Cross if you want one of the new engines though, with that model starting at £18,995 for the 1.0-litre car.
