New Lexus ES goes head-to-head with BMW 5 Series

Replacing the GS as Lexus’ mid-size executive car in Europe, the ES will offer hybrid powertrains and a luxurious interior

Lexus has unveiled its new ES executive saloon at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show. It’s a mid-sized executive saloon, aimed squarely at the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class, and will replace the longstanding GS in the UK and European markets when it launches early next year.

The ES features the latest Lexus design language, with a similar feel to the recently revealed UX crossover as well as the LC sports coupe. Range-topping models will gain 19-inch wheels with a similar design to the LC’s, while the firm’s now-trademark spindle grille and bold bodywork design make an appearance.

The ES rides on an all-new chassis, which is actually a development of parent company Toyota’s TNGA architecture which already underpins the current Toyota Prius, C-HR and US-market Camry. Lexus intends the ES to be a more driver-focused experience than the GS was, and as a result the new platform is more rigid, longer, wider and lower than its predecessor.

It’s a front-wheel-drive platform, setting the ES apart from its Mercedes and BMW rivals, which are both rear-drive. Unlike those cars, though, the engine line-up will not include any diesel – Lexus’ dislike of the fuel means the ES is likely to be offered exclusively as a hybrid model.

The launch model in the UK will be the ES 300h, mating a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine to a nickel metal hydride battery mounted underneath the backseat. Total output is 215bhp and claimed combined fuel economy is an impressive 60.1mpg. Lexus says it’s been retuned over previous hybrid systems to behave more like a traditional petrol engine – a sticking point for many enthusiasts.

Instead, Lexus will offer an F-Sport model from launch, with pseudo-sporty styling details and adjustable dampers similar to those in the LC sports coupe.

The ES will launch in the UK early in 2019, replacing the GS, which goes off sale this month.
