Artificial intelligence will be a central feature of Mitsubishi’s new e-Evolution concept car, which will be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show this month.

The electric concept vehicle features an artificial intelligence (AI) system as its “brain”, which “augments the driver’s capabilities”, says Mitsubishi.

Sensors allow the AI system to read changes in the road and traffic conditions, as well as changes in the driver’s intent. The technology can then co-ordinate driver intent with vehicle performance to better support driver safety and enhance the overall driving experience.

The e-Evolution concept also features a special coaching function that can improve a driver’s ability behind the wheel. After developing a training program by monitoring the driver’s skill, it will then use voice prompts and a dashboard display to relay advice to the driver.

In addition, Mitsubishi’s AI Personal Assistant will be able to control vehicle functions such as climate control, wipers and headlights through voice recognition technology.

It can also connect with a range of different devices. According to the Japanese manufacturer, it’s able to “connect with a drone to check traffic conditions ahead or give occupants a bird’s-eye view of the natural scenery they are passing through”.

The Mitsubshi e-Evolution concept is powered by three electric motors that drive all four wheels. A single motor powers the front wheels, while a dual motor AYC (which stands for active yaw control) links two rear motors to drive the back wheels.

Mitsubishi says the system “provides crisp and nimble handling that faithfully mirrors driver intent”.

The Mitsubishi e-Evolution concept will make its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show on October 25.
