Super-saloon available with four-wheel drive for the first time

BMW has revealed an all-new M5 — featuring all-wheel drive for the first time.

Based on the latest 5-Series, introduced in 2017, the super-saloon features an updated version of the outgoing model’s 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

The enhanced unit develops 591bhp and 750Nm of torque and is coupled to an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic gearbox.

As a result, the car can go from 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds and up to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph — although an optional M Driver’s package increases that to 189mph.

Putting this power to the ground is a newly developed M xDrive all-wheel-drive system — featuring on an M5 for the first time since the model debuted in 1985.

Although the system drives all four wheels by default, there is a two-wheel-drive setting, which sends all of the V8’s power to the rear of the car.

BMW says the suspension “has been tuned by experts and racing drivers at venues including the world’s most exacting test facility – the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit” in order to cope with the increased power and all-new drivetrain.

Compound brakes feature on the car, and are complemented by blue calipers. Carbon ceramic brakes are available as an optional extra, which shave 23 kilograms from the car’s total weight. As standard, these are hidden behind 19-inch alloy wheels — with the option of larger 20-inch rims.

To distinguish the M5 from the rest of the 5-Series range, a number of revisions to the bodywork have been made. The front bumper receives broader air intakes in order to help cool the engine and brakes, with a diffuser also being added to the rear of the car. M’s iconic quad exhausts complement the look.

The new M5 can be ordered from September, with first deliveries scheduled for spring 2018. UK pricing has yet to be announced, although in Europe the super-saloon is available from €117,900 (circa £108k).
