Ferrari’s twin-turbo V8 has won International Engine of the Year – again
The 488’s powertrain continues to win accolades, with Honda and Tesla also picking up gongs
Ferrari’s 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 has won the International Engine of the Year Award for the second year running.
The Italian manufacturer’s high-performance powertrain – known as F154CB – took top honours at a ceremony at the Engine Expo 2017 in Stuttgart, Germany.
With 58 judges from 31 countries casting votes, the Ferrari unit won thanks to its 661bhp output and the fact that the full 760Nm of torque is available from just 3,000rpm.
Dean Slavinch, co-chairman of the International Engine of the Year Award, said: “It is fitting that probably the best turbocharged engine ever developed has secured back-to-back outright International Engine of the Year Award titles.
“Its blend of heart-thumping performance on both road and track, with a glorious V8 Maranello rumble and an ultra-sophisticated design that’s loaded with advanced technologies, makes the Ferrari V8 unbeatable for another year.”
Elsewhere on the night, the 3.5-litre V6 hybrid unit found in the Honda NSX won the New Engine title, breaking the Japanese manufacturer’s 11-year absence from the awards.
To mark the prominence of low-emission engine technology, a new Electric Powertrain award joined the Green Engine category for 2017. Relative automotive newcomer Tesla beat established marques such as BMW, Volkswagen and General Motors to win the title.
Jason Cammisa, from American magazine Motor Trend who was one of the judges, said: “Tesla is still in a class of one where EVs are concerned. These products represent the only real-world alternative to internal combustion. And one of its cars is the quickest car ever produced — quite a bonus.”
Other winners on the night included Porsche, Audi and BMW.
