Richard Hammond praises medics after horrific Switzerland crash

Richard Hammond has spoken from hospital following the horrific crash he was involved in in Switzerland.

Hammond was filming for the latest series of The Grand Tour when the Rimac Concept One electric supercar he was driving crashed off the Hemburg Hill Climb course on Saturday.

The former Top Gear presenter managed to climb out of the wreck before it burst into flames, and was then flown by air ambulance to a hospital in St Gallen.

Speaking from his hospital bed yesterday, Hammond said: “Yes, it’s true, I’ve binned it. Again. The net result being I’m here in a hospital in Switzerland.”

The TV star was found to have a fractured knee, which he said doctors would turn into a “Swiss Army knee” when he was treated later in the day.

Hammond continued: “I’d like to thank all the medical professionals who got me by air ambulance from the crash and to this hospital and have dealt with me ever since.

“And most importantly, sorry to my wife Mindy and my daughters Izzy and Willow.”

A statement released on The Grand Tour Twitter page said: “The cause of the crash is unknown and is being investigated.”

This is not the first time Hammond has been involved in a serious accident while driving high-performance vehicles for television.

Back in 2006, Hammond notoriously crashed a jet-powered Vampire dragster while filming for Top Gear.

Although the incident left the presenter with serious head injuries, he managed to make a full recovery and returned to the show in early 2007.
