Honda produces one millionth SH scooter

Popular scooter has been in production since 1984

The one millionth Honda SH scooter has rolled off the company’s Atessa production line in Italy.

The successful scooter has been in production since 1984, with the SH50 moped bringing mobility to the masses. Its clever design saw the battery, fuel tank and oil reservoir all contained under the seat, while a basic instrument display was housed in the centre of the handlebars.

Though the SH was originally built in Belgium, production of the second-generation scooter moved to its now current site in Atessa in 1996. In 2006, it was named Europe’s best-selling scooter, with over 17,000 scooters sold. The latest model went into production in December 2016, adding LED lights and new styling to the successful package. It even features a remotely-operating Smart Key – worlds away from the standard key used to start the first-generation SH.

The Atessa plant currently builds all three models in the SH range – the SH125, SH150 and SH300. The SH125 is incredibly efficient, and can achieve a claimed 141.2mpg thanks to a liquid-cooled four-stroke engine. Power is driven to the rear wheel via an automatic CVT gearbox.
