Debris spills into road during Wolverhampton Market demolition

Work to demolish Wolverhampton's former market took an unexpected turn as a wall collapsed, spilling debris on to the road.

A group of five construction workers were spotted trying to deal with the collapsed wall along at the former Westside Wolverhampton Retail Market at Peel Street.

Construction workers at the scene said that the wall had "come down the wrong way" and that they closed the road to both motorists and pedestrians to clear up the debris.

An image, shared on social media, showed how the wall appeared to have come down unexpectedly, collapsing the protective barrier, spilling debris of bricks and dust into the road.

The rubble from the wall was cleared by around 3.30pm.

The demolition site supervisor told the Express & Star that some debris had fallen into the road, but no members of the public were in danger as the road was blocked off.

He said: "When the wall came down we had someone at the end of the road to stop traffic and pedestrians. The wall has fallen the wrong way, sometimes that happens with demolitions. One of the lanes was blocked while we cleaned the area up. It was clear within about 40 minutes."

Work to demolish the old market is continuing this year. Earlier this week we reported that market traders will relocate from Market Square to a new home in Cleveland Street on the site formerly used by Netto and a furniture store.

The move will pave the way for a £55 million regeneration scheme which is set to dramatically transform the western part of the city centre.

A City of Wolverhampton Council spokesman said: "We were alerted to the fact debris from the demolition of the former market hall had fallen into the road.

"The debris was cleared swiftly and the site has been secured.

"The council's project team is now reviewing the incident with the contractor responsible and additional safety measures will be introduced before demolition continues on this part of the site."
