The shop, in the town's High Street, is expected to shut down on October 1.

A Co-op spokesman said the decision was taken with 'great reluctance,' but would not reveal why.

Ward councillors have spoken of their disappointment about the closure.

A spokesperson for the Co-op, confirmed: "The decision to close any store is taken with the greatest reluctance, and forms part of our ongoing food store review and long-term growth strategy, which is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum to deliver a compelling and co-operative shopping experience.

"Colleagues have been informed and every effort will be made to find alternative employment for them. We would like to thank our customers for their valued custom and support."
