Run For Joel: Mother of Tunisia terror victim hails fundraiser
"I am absolutely buzzing. It's a wonderful turnout and Joel would have absolutely loved it if he had been here today."
The words of Suzy Richards, Joel's mother, as the 5km Run For Joel fundraiser got underway at Sandwell Valley Country Park.
Hundreds gathered with Smile for Joel merchandise, including whistles, t-shirts and wristbands before either competing in the 5km competitive race or the 3km fun run.
Joel's former football team, Wednesbury Sports Union Under 12s, also took part - with assistant manager Kenny Humphries running both races.
Manager, Richard James, from West Bromwich, said: "This is really important for the boys today. Joel used to play for us when he was younger and it first got set up - it was his first football club.
"He will always be a part of us and we are even planning on doing a memorial trophy at our next presentation.
"Its just a great day to be part of."
Nicola Turner, from Sedgley, and her daughters nine-year-old Olivia and 13-year-old Ellie were also competing in the fun run wearing light up head-bands and Smile for Joel t-shirts.
Mrs Turner said: "I work for Sandwell Council and when I heard about it I knew we had to take part.
"My friends Mandy mentioned it first and we all decided we would come along together.
"I think no one could have imagined that this many people would be here when the idea first came about. It is a fantastic cause and brilliant weather too."
Entertainment was provided by the Ingram Academy of Performing Arts, from Willenhall, to warm up the crowd before the 5km race was declared open by Mayor of Sandwell Councillor Julie Webb.
Walsall FC manager Jon Whitney started the 3km fun run as well as taking part himself.
He said: "It was an honour for me when Suzy asked me to come and start the 3km. I am here to represent the club and the fans who could not be here today. We want to help the family out any way we can as this is really important to me."
