Work on fast food outlets has started in Stourbridge

The start of a multi-million pound restaurant development has got under way in Stourbridge – with the long-awaited scheme being welcomed in the town.

The site will include McDonald's and KFC drive-thru branches, with the name of a third unit yet to be announced by developers. It will be on a site off Mill Race Lane, which is on the outskirts of the town centre.

Plans were first granted permission back in August 2014, but due to a series of construction delays, work only officially got under way this month.

Councillor Nick Barlow, who represents the Stourbridge Town Ward, said he welcomed the beginning of work on the 'long overdue' development.

He said: "Everyone is really happy that at long last the build has begun, as it has looked such a mess for so long.

"It is very welcomed as it will get more footfall into the town and create employment, which is always good news. It is a good opportunity all round."

It is thought that at least 65 full and part-time jobs will be created by McDonald's, with a further 40 positions expected to be available at the KFC restaurant.

A 66-space car park will be built between the units.

Concerns about access to the site and a potential increase in rubbish were raised when the proposal was first revealed.

Councillor Barlow continued: "There have been a few concerns about cars and anti-social behaviour but I think that's something that won't happen as it will be monitored well.

"The traffic will be coming off towards Amblecote and not back on the ring road as

some feared – so it should have a sensible road layout.

"We have got to be mindful of litter but I believe that both chains are good at keeping that under control.

"People may be worried about anti-social behaviour but that is something you can get anywhere really.

"We will be speaking to the managers and keeping a close eye on things so that they engage positively with us and the police."

A spokesman for A&H Construction, which is behind the build, said the work should be finished next year.

He said: "Work started on August 1 and is due to be finished by March 10 next year.

"We hope it to be a great development for the town."

It will be the first time a McDonald's has been open in the town since it closed its branch in the High Street back in 2008 after 20 years of trading.
