The Walsall Brass Band was set up in 2014 by Roger Bates, 69, a keen musician. He was inspired to play the piano by his father before he moved in to the brass section.

Now he is keen to add to its 10 members over the next few months. Mr Bates said: "I started the band about 20 months ago.

"We had not got a sheet of music. I sent off for Christmas carols for bands. That Christmas we went out to about nine, 10 supermarkets in the area. What we are hoping to get is up to about 20 players.

If you have a full brass band you have about 27, 28 players."

He said that potential players could range from competent to virtuoso.

Normally though the musicians should have obtained grade four on their instrument before they are considered.

But other players who have not achieved that could also be invited to join the band's training group.

The band is especially looking for players who could play first trombone and euphonium to play music from their wide repertoire.

It usually starts playing hymns at concerts, then sometimes plays classical pieces, music from shows and other pop classics.

Mr Bates said recently the band has been playing hits by Adele, ABBA and the Village People's classic YMCA. He said: "The aim really is to provide brass band music and to promote brass band music in the Walsall area."

Roger said the band also has a music teacher who will be able to help any flourishing musicians improve their technique and ability.

The brass band meets every Tuesday, from 7.45pm until 9.30pm, at the Walsall Cricket Club, on Gorway Road, to practise and socialise.
