Park ward was the sole Remain area out of the city's 20 council wards, with residents voting in favour of staying in the union by 54.2 per cent to 45.8 per cent.

The city voted overwhelmingly in favour of leaving the EU, with 62.57 per cent backing Leave and just 37.43 voting to Remain.

But a ward-by-ward breakdown of the results reveals that in four areas more than 70 per cent of residents backed the Leave camp.

The figures, which were issued by Wolverhampton council, show that Wednesfield North was the most Eurosceptic area of the city, with more than three quarters of a total turnout of 69.3 per cent voting Leave.

Bilston East was the second most Brexit area on 74.1 per cent, followed by Bilston North (71 per cent), Wednesfield South (70.7 per cent) and Bushbury North (70.4 per cent).

Other Leave strongholds were East Park, where 3,725 of 5,353 votes were for Leave (69.6 per cent), and Fallings Park, which saw 68.8 per cent of votes favouring Brexit.

The city's highest turnout in the referendum was in Springvale, where almost nine out of every 10 eligible voters went to the polls (89.1 per cent).

Bushbury South and Low Hill had the lowest turnout at 58.5 per cent.

The overall turnout was high, with 118,037 of 174,760 voting in the referendum (67.5 per cent).

All three of the city's MPs, who all represent Labour, backed Remain during the campaign.
