Co-op worker left needing hospital treatment after armed raid in Coven
Men armed with wooden sticks left a shop worker needing hospital treatment after an attack at a Co-op last night.
The three men also assaulted a female staff member during the raid at the Coven store at around 10pm last night.
Wearing balaclavas and hoodies, the three men entered the shop armed with wooden sticks and assaulted one male and one female shop worker before making off with cash and cigarettes.
A fourth gang member operated as the getaway driver.
A sign at the Co-op on Brewood Road today said that the store was closed due to an incident and that it would remain shut until police had finished their investigation.
However, by mid-afternoon the shop had re-opened and was trading as normal.
Police have since recovered a white Vauxhall Vectra used as an escape vehicle by the thieves and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "The offenders fled with a quantity of cash, all coin based and cigarettes. They fled in a white car driven by a fourth member.
"The car was a white Vauxhall Vectra, with a distinctive black roof, which has since been recovered in Hill Street, Essington which we are now conducting forensics on.
"We are appealing for witnesses with the incident reference '823 March 28'."
A spokesperson for The Midcounties Co-operative said: "We are assisting the police with their investigation and continue to provide the necessary support for our colleagues."
