Boating blunder sees 400ft canal stretch drained

A 400ft stretch of Wordsley canal was accidentally drained by a boater who failed to close a lock gate properly.

A team from the Canal & River Trust was called out to raise water levels by the Red House Glass Cone at Wordsley.

The stretch of canal, which at the deepest part would be about 6ft, had to be completely refilled before it could be re-opened yesterday morning.

Officials have ruled out vandalism and instead suspect that a boater using the lock gate left open one of the paddles, which control the level of the water. This caused hundreds of gallons of water to drain out of the affected stretch.

It took several hours for water levels to return to normal on the stretch of the Stourbridge Canal between locks 12 and 13.
