Wearing balaclavas, they demanded money from the cashier at the post office in Pound Road yesterday at around 10am.

They fled the scene empty handed after the alarm was activated. The getaway was made in a black Ford Focus.

No workers were injured.

Karen Cooper, manager of Eat It Fresh, Pound Road, who saw the drama unfold, said: "I heard some ladies screaming from across the road.

"I walked to the door and that's when a black car was going to pull off and three men came running out and jumped into it.

"It is extremely frightening to think that this is happening in our area."

Police are appealing for witnesses to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
