The troublemakers have been standing on bridges and embankments by the dual carriageway and hurling bricks and other objects, with windscreens shattered as a result.

There have been eight incidents reported in the past four weeks.

Police today warned someone could be killed if the vandalism continues.

Officers have stepped in patrols in a bid to catch the yobs, the youngest of which they believe is just 10.

Pc Phil Upton, from the Bilston and Spring Vale neighbourhood team, said: "We're concerned there's the potential for serious injury or worse.

"They've generally been goods vehicles and they've either gone through the glass or cracked the windscreen.

"At the moment it's minor criminal damage but there is the potential for a far more serious offence to be committed.

"We're very concerned. It's got the potential for something very serious to happen"

Pc Upton said he believed it was a gang of youths carrying out the attacks rather than just one person. Each time, they have struck between 6.30pm and 10.45pm at night.

Witnesses have described one young boy aged around 10 in a blue hooded top with white stripes along the arms and the hood up.

Objects have been thrown between the Citadel building near the Lunt estate, up to the roundabout by Bilston Fire Station.

Pc Upton urged anyone with information to get in touch. CCTV is also being looked at as police try and identify the suspects.

He added: "We are aware of the danger this kind of behaviour poses and it is lucky that no one has been badly hurt as a result of the offenders' actions.

"The issue is that drivers are concentrating on driving and then something's gone through the screen, so they perhaps haven't got a good look at who's done it.

"We've stepped up patrols in the area.

"We continue to scour CCTV in the area and officers are engaged with local youths to both help with enquiries and educate them in the dangers of this kind of behaviour.

"Tackling this type of crime forms part of our patrols in the area and we have been out trying to identify and locate the person or people involved.

"Anyone caught causing criminal damage can expect to be arrested and put before the courts."

The eight incidents took place between February 18 and March 12.

Anyone with information is urged to call Pc Phil Upton at Bilston Police Station on 101.
