The holds-ups are happening on the A449 into the village, caused by South Staffordshire Water's project to replace the 4km pipe that supplies homes.

The work is set to continue until the end of March.

Councillor Leonard Bates, who represents Penkridge North East & Acton Trussell, said people had been caught up in long delays.

"It's certainly been causing some problems on the road with the traffic lights holding vehicles up," Councillor Bates said. "But you have got to balance the problems with the benefits Penkridge will receive afterwards.

"The local people are accepting the roadworks as a temporary hindrance as they understand it will eventually benefit them in the long term once complete."

South Staffs Water said more than 5,000 people in the area will benefit when the project is complete.

Mike Morris, network performance manager, said: "This work is being carried out to replace the water main and enhance the water services we provide for the people of Penkridge.

"To ensure the safety of motorists and our employees, it will be necessary to operate traffic lights along the A449 at certain times. In agreement with Staffordshire County Council's highways department, these will be manually operated so we can best assist the flow of traffic."

"We are working to complete this work as quickly as possible, and would like to apologise for any disruption this planned work may cause, especially to motorists, and thank people for their patience."

Anyone with questions regarding the work can contact South Staffs Water on 0800 389 10 11.
