He leaves behind fiancée Liz Jones and his three daughters Demi, aged 16, Caitlin, nine, Scarlet, five, and son Sam, 11.

Mr Downs met Miss Jones at Hagley Catholic High School when they were 11. They were together throughout school before re-uniting aged 23.

They were engaged for 12 years.

"He loved us dearly and was very devoted to us and our happiness," Miss Jones said.

"He was my loveable rogue, and overall I'd like him to be remembered as a family man with a good heart and a fantastic sense of humour, always making us laugh every day.

"Words cannot describe the massive void he has left in all of our lives.

"We miss and love him so much.

"I would like to thank all of our family and friends for their support over the past difficult few days."

Miss Jones said her partner was a fan of Johnny Cash and enjoyed socialising with friends.

She said: "He was a home bird, always building things, and he worked really hard to look after us. He was our hero."

Mr Downs was hit by a Renault Megane travelling towards Wolverley and then a Peugeot 407 travelling in the opposite direction.

It happened close to the junction with Sion Hill at around 6.55pm.

Mr Downs, who lived in Comberton Hill, was pronounced dead at the scene. A funeral has yet to be organised.

The crash triggered a large emergency service response involving three fire engines, police and ambulance crews.
