It is believed a support arm from the lorry broke free and caused the damage in New Cross Avenue, destroying six cars and damaging up to 15. Plastic and glass filled the street in the aftermath.

West Midlands Police were called to the accident at 3pm yesterday and the road was closed for several hours. No-one was hurt.

The street is often used for parking by both staff and patients at New Cross Hospital. Colin Robinson, who owned one of the damaged cars, said: "I work at the hospital and someone came and told us that the cars had been damaged. My first thought was that I hoped it wasn't my car.

"My second was that I was thankful nobody had been injured. You can repair a car, but not a person.

"At the end of the day, there could have been kids walking home from school or something like that, so it's just good that nobody has been hurt." Another owner, Tina Ward, added: "A few minutes later and I could have been getting into my car when it happened. It could have easily been much worse."

The vehicles had to be towed away and rubble from the accident lined the street for hours afterwards.

Another eyewitness, who didn't want to be named, said: "I reckon six cars are total write-offs and about 15 were damaged in total after they shunted into each other.
