A recruitment drive has been launched for 100 warehouse workers at a growing parcels delivery business in Cannock.

Courier company APC Overnight is now advertising for the posts at its headquarters in Kingswood Lakeside Business Park.

The firm moved into its new £15 million national sorting centre last summer and its commitment to creating new jobs has been hailed as a boost for the area.

They announced earlier this year they were looking to recruit up to 140 extra staff which included forklift truck drivers.

It is hoped the recruitment of the hundred warehouse operatives will be completed by the end of September.

Cannock Chase Council leader George Adamson said: "It is excellent news, that is a lot of jobs and it is very welcome.

"I am sure there will be a lot of interest. It is a company growing in the area," he said.

The move from its old base at Essington to Cannock has seen APC double in size, recruiting hundreds of extra staff.

Independent online retailers have turned to using APC because it offers higher speed delivery and fragile parcels services.

The Cannock centre handles an average of 100,000 items every night, rising to 120,000 on Mondays. In the run-up to Christmas this is expected to rise to 150,000 a night.

The company currently employs 430 staff, mostly working overnight and since the move to the new base turnover has risen by more than 17 per cent to £88 million.

Its success in recent years saw the company win the Express & Star Business of the Year award in both 2012 and 2013. More than 300 members of the public went to view plans which would see the largest ever designer outlet built in the Midlands.

A two-day exhibition was held at South Staffordshire College's Cannock Campus, showing off the Mill Green Outlet Village proposals last month.

The shopping and leisure park will include a multi-screen cinema, up to six restaurants and 130 shops.

The proposals will then be unveiled to the public before a planning application is submitted to Cannock Chase Council towards the end of the year.

The development is also set to include a tourist information centre, a play park, and new transport links between the train station, town centre and the outlet village.

Big names such as Superdry, Paul Smith and Ralph Lauren are likely to open at the site off Lichfield Road next to Mill Green Nature Reserve.
