Months of work lie ahead for residents in parts of Wednesfield.

Severn Trent Water is spending a total of £960,000 to renew more than four miles of water pipes in the town, with the work taking place in phases.

Bosses say the pipes are now old and need to be replaced to prevent leaks and bursts.

The work is due to start next month (JUN) and will be completed by May 2015.

Dave Kiernan, programme engineer for Severn Trent, said: "We're investing nearly £1 million to renew 8km of water pipes in the Wednesfield area,

"These pipes have been serving the community for many years and so need to be replaced.

"This will help to reduce leaks and bursts in the area and also make sure our customers continue to enjoy a reliable supply of high quality water."

The work had originally been scheduled to take place last year but was postponed.

Mr Kiernan said this was because there was lots of work taking place in the area.

"We wanted to make sure we did everything in one go rather than coming back several times," he said.

"There's also a lot of development happening in the area, so we wanted to wait and make sure we could lay new pipes for the new developments at the same time.

"We know that the work we'll be doing, including closing roads, will be an inconvenience for people and we want to keep that to an absolute minimum for our customers and the local community, hence the delay."

Roads affected by the work includes Lichfield Road, Waddens Brook Lane, Broad Lane South, Fibbersley and Pool Hayes Lane.

Lyndale Drive, Wem Gardens and Mere Close are also

It will be carried out in a phased programme.

Temporary traffic lights, one way systems and road closures could be in place, while advanced warning signs will be put up ahead of the work.

Severn Trent has also warned water supplies could be affected at some points during the work.

Letters have been sent to residents in affected streets.

A public exhibition for people to find out more is also being held today at Perry Hall Primary School, in Colman Avenue, from 3.30pm to 7pm.

Severn Trent has pledged to warn customers if any delays or changes to timescales occur.
