Motorists have been told to expect delays in the area and also to find an alternative route.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "Please be advised that The Gilgal, Stourport is closed due to an RTC and likely to be closed for several hours.

"Delays expected, please find an alternative route."

In an update issued later, police said: "The collision was discovered by officers who were responding to a report of a theft from a garage in Kidderminster where payment machines had been stolen.

"They saw a vehicle travelling away from the location and subsequently found that it had collided with a wall on The Gilgal."

An investigation into the theft is also under way and West Mercia Police says it will be referring the collision to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Jordan Eggington, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: “We were called at 4.44am to reports of a single vehicle RTC on Lombard Street.

"We sent three ambulances and a paramedic officer to the scene.

"We have treated two patients for potentially serious injuries and they were conveyed on blue lights and sirens to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

"A third patient was treated for injuries not believed to be serious and was also conveyed to WRH.”

West Mercia Police announced at around 10.20am that the road had been reopened.
