Lorry driver arrested as cyclist killed in A449 crash

A cyclist from Brierley Hill died and another was badly injured in a crash with a lorry today.

The man, aged in his 60s, was killed in the crash, which happened on the A449 in the Hartlebury area, south of Kidderminster, at 11am.

The collision happened in the Worcester-bound carriageway.

A 48-year-old man from Halesowen has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, West Mercia Police confirmed.

A second cyclist from Hagley, also aged in his 60s, is being treated in hospital.

The Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford was scrambled with a doctor and critical care paramedic on board, along with two ambulances and two paramedic officers.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “A police vehicle was only seconds away after the collision had happened.

"In addition, an off-duty paramedic and the crew of a WMAS non-emergency patient transport vehicle all stopped to provide assistance.

“Sadly, despite all of the efforts, it was not possible to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

“The second cyclist was treated at the scene before being taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further assessment and continued treatment.

“The lorry driver was uninjured."

The stretch of the A449 was closed four around four hours while collision investigators examined the scene.

West Mercia Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward and have urged anyone who has information or video footage to contact them on 101 quoting incident 215s of October 22.

The man's next of kin have been informed but formal identification is yet to take place.
