Wednesfield Methodist Church, in Wood End Road, has been used to host a variety of different community events after worship services ceased.

However, a planning application has now been submitted to the city council for the building to become a full-time facility for young children.

Councillor Phil Bateman said: “It’s very sad in a way to see the Methodist Church in Wood End Road being declared redundant.

“There is a planning application being considered to turn it into a children’s day nursery now.

“Methodism in Wednesfield seems to be very much in retreat. And in the city centre the religion has also lost the Methodist Central Church in Darlington Street – a magnificent building that is sitting empty now.”

“I think there are many people who will have a family link with that church,” he added.

The landmark Darlington Street church – with its notable large green dome – held its last service in September 2019 after almost 120 years of worship.

Located on the corner of Darlington Street and School Street, the present building opened in 1901, although the first church on the site dates back to 1825.

The future of the Grade II-listed city centre building has not yet been decided, but council bosses are currently examining a number of development options.

Planners will make a decision on the day nursery application for the Wood End Road building in the near future.
