The great-grandmother from Wednesfield was overjoyed to celebrate with her daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren at the 3 Hammers Golf Complex in Coven on Friday.

And to her greatest surprise, her 85-year-old sister Diana Robson, with niece Jackie, made the trip all the way from America to wish her many happy returns.

Edna's granddaughter Emma said there were guests from Wales, Devon, Sussex, and of course, Wednesfield at the special day.

She said: "I think nan had a really good time. She knew people were coming but I think she was surprised by how many. There were about 50 people there. She had cake, lots of flowers, and pictures of her from when she was young, and in her twenties, all around the room.

"She told me I was in trouble for arranging a photographer from the Express & Star to come though!"

Edna, who has one daughter, Cynthia, two grandchildren, Emma and Jon, and five great-grandchildren from the ages of five to 13, said she puts her long living down to enjoying "everything in moderation".

Granddaughter Emma added: "She says she keeps active and keeps busy. She doesn't overindulge but she does like a little tipple - a brandy or a little gin and tonic. She still lives in her own flat and stays moving around."

Edna has lived in Wednesfield all her life, starting work at local factory Jenks and Cattell Engineering Ltd straight from school until retirement. Her husband Frank died in 2003, not long after the pair celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Emma said: "She would love just popping down to Wednesfield, or "the village" she would say. But she doesn't do that anymore. She hasn't ever been on an aeroplane or even to London. But I don't think they had the money to back then. She's a real homebody and family orientated. She's just always been there for us as a nan."
