It is believed the explosive was found while the semi-detached house in Braden Road was being renovated.

Three houses either side of the house were cordoned off as police attended the scene at around midday yesterday.

Police left the scene later in the afternoon and they said the grenade is believed to have been real and that it was safely removed by the bomb disposal team.

Neighbours said it is believed the house was recently passed on to a beneficiary after the previous owner’s death, and the property was being renovated when the device was found.

Paul Gillam, a builder working at a nearby property, said: “I saw the police arrive followed by the bomb disposal team, the cordon was put in place and we were told to stop working.”
