Jason Richardson, aged 40, lost his grandfather, Ken Porter, to the progressive neurological disease in March.

The family has shared many holidays together at the Welsh seaside town and Mr Porter, who died aged 82, had previously had a caravan there.

Mr Richardson is taking on the cycling challenge on Saturday. His five-year-old son, Joel, will join him on the road for the final stages.

Mr Richardson, of Penn, Wolverhampton, said: "I really just want to raise a bit of awareness for The Alzheimer's Society.

"My granddad was a fit bloke up until 15 years ago. It was only really the last seven years we saw it coming and the last two years when he really suffered.

"Thankfully he did not forget his family as that would have killed us. But he couldn't remember things like whether he had had his tea."

Mr Richardson, who works as a plant operative, intends to leave an engraved padlock overlooking the harbour in his grandfather's memory.

He added: "Tenby was a special place for all of us. Growing up he had a caravan there.

"He was a self-employed worker and he would find work there. We would all go down there for summer breaks. It was where he loved to be."

Mr Richardson, who also has a three-year-old daughter, Isla-Rose, has set up a Justgiving page to help raise money for The Alzheimer's Society.
