The pupils from Northwood Park Primary School, Collingwood Road, Bushbury, are being treated in hospital and are said to be improving.

Public Health England (PHE) is working with staff at the school and the Public Health team at Wolverhampton council in light of the cases.

PHE West Midlands Health Protection Team has advised the school that no health protection measures are required and that children can attend school as normal.

Dr Carol Chatt, PHE West Midlands Health Protection consultant, said: “There are many different causes of meningitis, but the two most common organisms are viruses and bacteria. Viral meningitis is usually less serious than bacterial meningitis and is reasonably common.

"We have advised that no actions need to be taken by staff at the school, and that children can attend the school as normal.”
