Dylan, 9, raises £690 for Midland hospital
A nine-year-old boy has raised almost £700 for the NHS after setting himself a cycling challenge.
Dylan Atkinson, from Bilston, aimed to ride his bike 100km in May for Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
The youngster wanted to raise £100 – but has raised a total of £690 after he completed the challenge on May 20.
Jennie Atkinson, his mother, said: "He decided himself that he wanted to do something to raise money for the NHS and his father has had three operations at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
"Dylan is quite a bright boy and thought he wanted to raise some money for that and it's quite a challenging thing – it's not something he naturally enjoys, but we're very proud.
"He's raised £690 so far and he's quite happy with it – he got to £100 within the first day and thought 'it's gone quite quickly'. He's very pleased by it."
The challenge was undertaken on the Birmingham New Road into Wolverhampton, with the wide route helping Dylan to cycle down freely.
And he has captured each moment of his journey through his fundraising page, sharing his status and a map of the route he completed.
The youngster has been supported by his mother and his father, Chris Atkinson, throughout the challenge.
Mrs Atkinson, aged 38, added: "He wanted to do something we said 'you could do 100k in May' and he liked that, since it rhymed, and he did it."
Dylan said he was "very proud" of the accomplishment but said it was difficult in some parts.
