The businessman from Bilston – who registered his vehicles in the name of a family member – was caught speeding on three separate occasions between 2012 and 2017.

Rajeev Kumar personally filled out the speeding tickets posted to the registered keeper, and returned them to the Central Ticket Office (CTO) nominating a foreign named driver instead of himself.

Suspicion arose when the 42-year-old sent a document which can only be filled in and sent by the car’s owner, back to the CTO from his personal email account earlier this year.

As such the case was referred to a specialist fraud officer who delved back into past submissions and discovered the same name and Indian address had been used twice. Using the latest search technology, the officer was able to see that no one with that name had entered or left the country in the last five years.

Kumar was later questioned and admitted perverting course of justice by fraudulently filling in the paperwork. He appeared at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday, November 1, and was given a six month prison sentence and a 15 month driving ban. He will have to take an extended test before regaining his licence.

Pc Jason Dooley, from the camera enforcement unit, said: “Speeding is a serious matter and those who lie to avoid a fine or penalty points will be hauled before the courts.

“Kumar thought he could persistently avoid punishment but justice caught up with him and he is now behind bars.

“Speed limits are in place for a reason: to protect the safety of the public and other road users and he repeatedly showed no regard for the law.”
