Bilston fire: Blaze wrecks car parts garage amid asbestos warning
A fire gutted part of a car parts garage in Bilston following an explosion today.
Fire crews were alerted by a member of the public who called 999 at around 1.40pm.
Chard debris could be seen inside the premises in Earl Street, near Broad Street.
The roadway outside the premises was cordoned off in the aftermath of the blaze.
Crews from Willenhall and Bilston fire stations were called to extinguish the flames.
Two firefighters wore breathing apparatus to enter the garage and others used hose reel jets to try and control the flames.
Nearby residents were advised to keep their windows closed.
There was asbestos sheets on the roof of the garage.
Tweeting about the blaze on Tuesday, @WestMidsFire said: "Crews from @WillenhallFire & @BilstonFire at a fire on Broad St, Bilston.
"Asbestos roofing on fire - local residents to keep windows closed!"
Willenhall firefighters later said the asbestos was spread over a small area which will be cleared by the council.
"Our advice is not to touch the asbestos and to keep doors and windows closed," they added.
