Five-star dining in Wolverhampton - the city's pubs with the best hygiene rating
Whether it be a classic cheese and onion cob or a tandoori grill, pub grub can make or break a boozer. As can the hygiene rating.
The Food Standards Agency have rated the hygiene of every cafe, club, restaurant and anywhere which serves in Wolverhampton and these are the of five best rated pubs in the city.
Inspectors visit the premises and rate the hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage, the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, and the management of food safety.
If the inspectors mark two out of three categories as "very good" then the owners can proudly display the 5-star hygiene rating on the front door.
The Wheatsheaf Hotel, Wolverhampton City Centre
This Market Street pub is the HQ of Wolverhampton Wanderers supporters and is usually standing room only on match days.
During the week, the big sellers are the cobs, either cheese and onion or beef, with added option of horseradish sauce. However, on Sundays the pub's Sunday roasts, overseen by the gaffer Lisa are popular. The puddings are popular too with Lisa's family recipe being used for homemade apple pie or crumble served with piping hot custard.
A clean sweep of Very Goods was the result of the last FSA inspection in April 2022 giving The Wheatsheaf Hotel a 5 Hygiene rating.
The Ashmore Inn, Wednesfield
The Griffiths Drive pub is at the centre of its community, who rallied round when the Inn needed it the most when its future was in doubt a few years ago.
Now thriving, Tina and the team host a variety of community groups and events throughout the month. Live music, comedy and theme nights keep regulars and new customers entertained. A pensioners luncheon club is also popular.
The pub's motto is "enter as a stranger, leave as a friend, come back as family” and they certainly will be raising a glass to the Food Standards Agency inspectors who rated them very good after visiting the premises in June this year.
Bilston Sports & Social Club
The Wellington Road social club has all the big names, Tom Jones and UB40 are gracing its stage in the run up to Christmas.
Tribute acts pull in the audiences and the rooms are often hired out for weddings, anniversaries and special occasions. The food needs to be to scratch because the British Gunslingers Association hold their Country and Western nights and shooting competitions at the club, as well as Cowboy Bingo. People come from far and wide to experience this unique piece of Americana in the Black Country. The last Food Standards Association inspection was in January 2022.
The Elizabeth Arms Public House, Bilston
The Sizzling Overfield Drive pub offers a lunch, kids, buffet and full menu to its customers.
The Sizzling signature dish is sirloin steak served on a skillet with onions, onion rings, chips, a grilled half tomato and button mushrooms.
However, vegetarians and vegans are given the option of a Beyond Meat Burger. The last FSA inspection was October 2022 with the club getting three Very Goods earning it that all important 5 star Hygiene rating.
The Moreton Arms, Fordhouses
