Man taken to hospital after Wolverhampton flat fire

A man was treated by paramedics after a fire at a block of flats in Wolverhampton.

Emergency services were called to the flats in Renton Road, in the Oxley area, at around 9.45pm on Sunday.

A man was led to safety by firefighters and treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: "We had a call at 9.43pm on Sunday to a fire at a two-storey low-rise block of flats in Renton Road, in the Oxley area. We sent two fire engines and a brigade response vehicle to the scene – one engine from Tettenhall fire station and the other vehicles from Fallings Park.

"The incident involved a severe fire in a first-floor flat in the building.

"One man was led to safety by firefighters and was given first aid for smoke inhalation and what appeared to be minor burns, before being handed over to the ambulance service.

"Three other people living in the building were also evacuated. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a fire in a flat on Renton Road in the Oxley area of Wolverhampton at just before 10pm on Sunday. An ambulance and a paramedic officer were sent to the scene.

"One man had been brought out of the property by firefighters was treated for minor injuries before being taken to New Cross Hospital for further assessment."

West Midlands Police also attended the scene and has been approached for comment.
