Girl, 17, fights for life after Christmas Eve crash in Wolverhampton

A teenage girl is in a critical condition in hospital after an early-hours crash in Wolverhampton.

The 17-year-old passenger suffered life-threatening injuries in the two-car crash in Lower Street, Claregate, just before 2.30am today.

The crash involved a black VW Golf and a BMW and happened at the junction of Lower Street and Sandy Lane, around 200 metres away from the Claregate pub and Tesco Express.

Two occupants of the BMW received minor injuries in the crash.

An 18-year-old man, believed to be the driver of the Golf, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He remains in custody for questioning.

The road was closed by police for collision investigations

The road has been closed for most of Christmas Eve morning while collision investigators establish what happened.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "A teenage girl has been seriously injured in a collision in Wolverhampton in the early hours of this morning.

"The 17-year-old was a passenger in a black VW Golf which collided with a BMW at the junction of Sandy Lane, Lower Street, Codsall Street and Lothians Road just before 2.30am. She has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Two occupants in the BMW received minor injuries.

"The 18-year-old driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He remains in custody for questioning. The road remains closed while collision investigators establish what happened.

"Anyone who witnessed what happened and hasn’t already spoken to police should contact us."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman added: "We were called to reports of a two-car RTC on Sandy Lane at 2.25am. Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a MERIT trauma doctor were sent to the scene.

"On arrival we discovered there were four occupants of the vehicles.

"One of them, a female patient, was found to be in a critical condition.

"She received specialist trauma care at the scene before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital on blue lights and sirens.

"The other three occupants did not require treatment."

The Penn and Tettenhall local police team urged people to avoid the area and said diversions are in place.
