Asda, on Jack Hayward Way, in Wolverhampton, will have a three-lane canopy installed on the car park for people who order online and be able to pick up without entering the store.

Bosses believe the new collection service will reduce the number of people going into the supermarket, making it safer for employees and the general public.

The plans, which have been approved by Wolverhampton Council planners, also include the removal of ‘grocery lockers’ currently on the site and the creation of five new bays on the car park.

More Covid-19 coverage:

In their application, agents CA Design said: “The grocery collection canopy will be used by customers and colleagues.

“The customers will pull up under the grocery collection canopy in their cars and alert the Asda colleagues to their presence via the intercom.

“The Asda colleague will then come out of the store with the customers shopping and will help load the shopping into the customers cars, the customer will then drive off.

“The canopy will provide cover for six customer waiting/collection spaces.

“In principle, the colleagues will have protection from the weather and will be able to load cars without the customers’ shopping becoming wet.

“Or (it will) provide enough covered space for colleagues to leave shopping so customer can load car without shopping getting wet to abide by Covid-19 regulations.

“The aim is for more customers to be able to shop using the click and collect system. This will reduce numbers in store to help reduce colleague and customer exposure to Covid-19.

“It has been designed to ensure there is enough room for vehicle doors to be opened safely and adequate circulation space for staff.”
