Traffic delays after crash between car and tram in Wolverhampton city centre
Dramatic photos show the aftermath of a crash involving a car and a tram in Wolverhampton city centre this morning.
The crash took place on the Bilston Road, near to the ring road island, at around 7.20am.
Photos from the scene show a blue Renault Clio wedged between a lamppost and the West Midlands Metro tram.
The driver of the vehicle has been checked over by paramedics and is not believed to have sustained any serious injuries. A woman was also assessed for minor injuries, but was discharged at the scene.
West Midlands Metro is investigating the incident.
The crash caused delays across the city this morning, as well as disruption on the West Midlands Metro line.
A West Midlands Metro spokesman said: “We can confirm that a car was involved in a collision with a tram this morning on Bilston Road near the Wolverhampton St. George’s stop.
“Services between The Royal and Wolverhampton St. George’s were temporarily suspended to enable recovery of the car and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.
“We understand that no serious injuries have been reported and services are now running through to all stops.
"An investigation into the incident is ongoing.”
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We are currently at the scene of a collision between a tram and a car on Bilston Road, Wolverhampton which happened at about 7.20am today.
"One man in the car was checked over by paramedics but is understood not to have suffered any injuries.
"We remain at the scene for traffic purposes while the vehicles are recovered."
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman added: "We were called at 7.23am to Bilston Road, Wolverhampton to reports of a collision involving a car and a tram. An ambulance, paramedic officer and critical care paramedic attended the scene.
"Two patients, a man and a woman, received treatment on scene for minor injuries before being discharged on scene."
