Flats plan for old Wolverhampton pub
An old Wolverhampton pub could be converted into apartments after a number of attempts to keep it open failed.
Applicants Harrisons Group are looking to create seven two-bedroom apartments within the former White Hart Inn building in Worcester Street.
In their application to Wolverhampton Council planners, their agents Sigma Home Solutions said four different businesses had taken over the pub between 2011 and 2019 but subsequently failed.
They also said there had been several incidents of trouble flaring up in the pub which led to violence within the premises.
It is believed the pub dates back to 1923 and is locally listed but, in a heritage statement, Sigma said there will be little alteration to the “attractive building”.
They said: “The proposal is vital to the preservation of this attractive and distinctive period building.
“Currently its vacant use is having a detrimental effect on the fabric of the building and could lead to potential dilapidation.
Positive
“With a strong demand for residential two bedroom flats within the city centre it is expected the building could be fully occupied for the foreseeable future which in turn provides a positive effect on the area.
“The lack of interest in the public house is also evident in the recent history of ownership of the property and business. Records show that since 2011 four different businesses have run the public house for short periods of time.
“Should the public house have had a committed group of patrons then (it) would still be operating however now the property remains vacant.
“Other issues supporting the proposed loss of this public house centre around the history of anti-social behaviour that has occurred within the White Hart Inn.
“By developing this building into dwellings, we not only satisfy a requirement for much-needed housing in the area but also provide an economic benefit and which will increase activity within the city centre once again.
“We feel these reasons should encourage Wolverhampton Council to support this application.”
Planning officers are currently considering the application and a decision will be made in the coming months.
