The tree on Newbridge Playing Fields was sent crashing down to the ground in the high winds on Saturday morning.

It fell across gardens of terraced houses next to it and landed directly on a shed which has been turned into a bar in one garden but nobody was injured.

Kelly Dean, who lives on Crowther Road, explained: "I've got a shed which I turned into a bar.

"I heard a smash and I thought it took down the whole bottom of the garden, my dad came down and helped me cut down branches to release the pressure. It's taken the corner of the roof on the bar and smashed things inside.

"At first it looked really scary, if it went straight down it would've taken our houses out.

"It's taken the phone lines down too so I ran up the street making sure the elderly residents were ok.

"My next door neighbour can't even get into her garden.

"It's been reported so many times to the council."

Fabian Porter, whose mother Phyl Porter lives in one of the houses nearby, said nearby residents had been urging the council to make the trees safe for some time.

"Unfortunately at 8.45am the one tree came down. It's gone across people's gardens, luckily not hitting anyone," he said.

"The neighbours heard it and they rang my mother to see if she was ok.

"My mother's house is a couple of houses up from where it happened.

"Luckily it was quarter to nine and not quarter to 11.

"I've contacted the council months ago saying something is going to happen.

"It could've been really dangerous.

"The trees are taller than the houses, they're at least 40ft high."
