Wolverhampton Council planners gave the green light to a proposal submitted by The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust to provide a new modular building.

It will be based on the car park next to the existing radiology unit, with the lost spaces and a parking ticket machine being relocated elsewhere on the hospital site.

In their application, the NHS Trust said the MRI unit will be in operation between 8am and 8pm, Monday to Friday.

Agents RPS Group said the modular building will consist of a lobby, scan room, control room, changing and cannulation area.

They said: “The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust is one of the largest acute and community providers in the West Midlands having more than 800 beds on the New Cross site including intensive care beds and neonatal intensive care cots.

“As the second largest employer in Wolverhampton the Trust employs more than 8,000 staff.

“The new building consists of a single storey modular building within the existing Radiology car park.

“The new modular build is required to provide an additional MRI unit to meet an expanding demand for such diagnostic facilities.

“Specific existing car parking spaces and park/ display machine must be relocated within the Radiology car park.”

Planning officer Martyn Gregory granted permission for the scheme and said: “The position and scale of the proposed moulder MRI unit is considered to be appropriate with no significant detriment to visual amenity.

“The proposed development would not harm the character and appearance of the area or highway safety. The scheme allows for the loss of car parking spaces to be provided within the site.”
