The essential maintenance works at Bob Jones Community Centre are needed after serious defects in the roof were identified, meaning a complete replacement is needed.
The work follows a series of leaks over the last few years.
The work at the hub in Bromley Street, Blakenhall, is expected to get under way in the next few weeks and take around three months to complete.
Because of the scale of the works, it will be necessary for the centre to remain closed to customers and staff during this time.
