Wednesfield youngsters, Finley Ryan, 13, and Charley, 15, embarked on a virtual fundraising bike ride to Paris.

The Royal Wolverhampton School students set out mid-April and paced themselves, planning their route across the channel and onto Paris covering 700km.

Their target was to raise £150.00 for the NHS, but since they have achieved more than three times the amount, raising upwards of £500.

Finley said: “My sister and I decided that we would like our physical goal to be to ride to Paris during the quarantine period.

"So, we got our road and mountain bikes out of the garage and began our long quest to Paris (sort of).

"Along the way we decided to research various places we “visited.”

Starting from Wednesfield, they went via Coventry, Watford, London, Dover, Calais, Lens, and finally Paris.

Along the way, they created virtual postcards with facts and information on each place visited, to support school cross curriculum links with history, geography, PHSE, art, sport etc and will deliver these to school assemblies when they return in September.

Charley added: “ We feel we’ve achieved quite a lot; a 700km bike ride, £530 raised and donated to New Cross Hospital, fitness levels kept up, new knowledge gained regarding places visited and we had lots of fun.

"We also learnt new things, such as dealing with saddle soreness, how to change punctures, handy navigation skills and finally how to eat a sandwich whilst riding a bike."

Dad Patrick, who supported the siblings throughout the ride, suggested their next goal is to do this bike ride for real in summer 2021 if restrictions allow it.
