Wolverhampton leisure centres hope to open by mid-July

Fitness fanatics in Wolverhampton will have to wait until at least mid-July before the city’s swimming pools and gyms open their doors again, leisure bosses have said.

The enforced closure of the city’s three council-owned leisure centres has seen thousands of people taking to alternative forms of exercise – including jogging, cycling, taking a daily walk and doing TV-led workouts at home.

Bosses at WV Active – the council’s leisure arm – have said that plans are being made to reopen both Central and the Bilston-Bert Williams centres.

However, the moves depend on the government giving the go-ahead for gyms and swimming pools to reopen.

More Covid-19 coverage:

The council’s third centre at Aldersley has been serving as the city’s food bank, distributing parcels to vulnerable families throughout lockdown.

Abigail Reed, marketing officer for Sport and Leisure, said: “We are hoping to open mid-July but are waiting on government guidance before we release our opening date.

“Our Aldersley site will open a little later as it is still being used as the city’s food distribution hub.

“It will be a phased approach, and again, these details will be released along with our reopening dates shortly.”

Since the centres were forced to close their doors at midday on March 20, staff across all three facilities have been posting a variety of regular blogs at wvactive.com

These include healthy recipes, home workout ideas, a guide to maintaining mental health and how to stay motivated during lockdown.
