Jack Williams, from Cannock, has cystic fibrosis and wanted to use his 12-week quarantine to help residents who might be feeling lonely.

The youngster came up with the idea as a way of saying 'thank you' to the Compton Road West-based hospice which looked after his grandmother.

More Covid-19 coverage:

Jack said: "Compton is the best place my nan has ever been looked after.

"The doctors and nurses are very respectful and kind. The patients are treated nicely and also get the best treatment you could possibly find, probably in the whole entire world.

"When my family went to Blackpool my nan had to stay at Compton as she was too poorly to come with us, so the staff made her a home-made beach outside her bedroom just like Blackpool’s beach and gave her a shandy and slush puppies."

The 10-year-old, along with his mother Steph, has written a series of letters offering to become a pen pal to patients who need a friend.

Steph said: "We wanted to write to the patients to let them know we are thinking of them and we are here for a chat, even if it is through pen and paper.

"Even if they don’t want to write back, we just hope it will make someone smile or not feel alone if they aren’t able to see friends or family at the moment."

The youngster has encouraged his friends to write letters to patients – and hopes even more people will join him in the next few weeks.

Grace Lee, communications manager at Compton Care, said: "We are so grateful to Jack and his mother Steph for such a kind and thoughtful gesture.

"Our patients have loved receiving their letters, they have certainly put a smile on their faces, and they are looking forward to receiving more in the coming weeks.

"We've been overwhelmed by the support shown by Jack and others just like him in the local community and want to thank everyone for their kind words and actions during such a difficult time for us all."
