History of family behind Molineux name showcased in exhibition

An exhibition into the origin of the Molineux family name in Wolverhampton has launched online due to coronavirus.

Molineux Pleasure Gardens - the Molineux family's house grounds in 1860 which became the city's first public park.

The Molineux name, which has become synonymous with the Wolves' stadium, started in the city with Benjamin Molineux – and the Molineux Hotel.

And now the exhibition, from Wolverhampton City Archives, has collated the history of the family and venue for residents to view.

Councillor Harman Banger, cabinet member for city economy, said: "This is a difficult time for us all and I am sure people are missing their leisure activities, such as visiting the city’s museums, gallery and archives.

"The creative arts are essential to people’s health and well-being and I am delighted to see the team has been working hard over the past couple of weeks to still make art accessibly digitally so that people can relax their minds by exploring the city’s collections and see exhibitions that were planned to be open through a different medium.

"The Molineux building is iconic within the city with thousands of visitors passing it daily, so to explore its history and that of the city’s I am sure will be a delight to Wulfrunians during this time."

Mr Molineux, an ironmonger and banker, lived in the Molineux Hotel building – now the City Archives – with his family for more than 100 years.

It was passed from generation to generation, with the building used as a home, as a hotel and a venue for public events.

The exhibition – Who lived in a house like this? 300 years of the Molineux Hotel building – was put together to mark 300 years since the original part of the building was built.
