Right Track, based off Goldthorn Hill in Wolverhampton, provides a base for adults with special needs where they can attend to do some gardening, arts and crafts and other activities.

But the building was broken into earlier this month, volunteers have said, with more than £2,500 worth of goods taken.

The rooms were also ransacked and property damaged.

Martyn Jones, a volunteer at Right Track, said it was "very upsetting".

"It's a place to get them – the people who come to us – out of their home environment. Their parents, carers have said it has changed their lives," he added.

"That's why it's so upsetting. They damaged the back door breaking in and then ransacked the centre looking for valuables. They damaged several inside doors too, and went through filing cabinets and personal lockers. They must have been looking for cash."

Members of the community have been left shocked

Martyn and other volunteers are now appealing for any help the community may be able to offer in getting the group back on its feet.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said officers are investigating: "We are investigating a burglary at a community centre in Goldthorn Park, Wolverhampton, which happened between 8pm on Friday, January 31 and 11.30am on Saturday, February 1.

"The offenders used lock cutters to open metal gates and after making an untidy search, left with a number of power tools.
