Surjit Singh, 36, was killed alongside 40-year-old Gheorge Mihai from Romania when the lorries they were driving collided near Luton at around 6.45am on Saturday.
Bedfordshire Police named the two men today as they appealed for witnesses to the incident to come forward.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened in the southbound carriageway between Junction 13 for Bedford and Junction 12 for Flitwick.
The stretch of the motorway between Milton Keynes and Luton was shut for nearly 16 hours as a result.
Images taken at the scene showed one of the lorry cabs left with severe damage and the other through an embankment.
Sergeant Aaron Murphy, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Roads Policing Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with both victim’s families at this time as we try to establish what caused these two vehicles to collide.
“If you have information, witnessed the collision, or have any dashcam footage to help us piece together the events leading up to this tragic incident, please do get in touch.”
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police on 101 or via the force's online reporting centre, quoting Operation Effervescence.
